My 2023 Resolutions & Goals

January 11, 2023 · In: GOALS & PLANNING

It’s almost the middle of the month and I’m just now getting to this post! To be honest, as much as I wanted to have myself together and ready to go by January 1st, I really needed a moment to 1). recover from the last quarter of 2022 (more on that in my next blog post) and 2). wrap my mind around how I wanted to approach this new year. I thought that both of these things wouldn’t take all that much time. I set goals every year, how hard should it be, right? But when I was going through my Build a Better Year course for myself, I quickly realized that I needed to process more than I thought I did! There was a lot of emotional baggage that I wasn’t fully aware of and all of it was impeding the clarity I needed to focus on goal setting for 2023.

While I’m still processing some of that emotional baggage, I have written my resolutions and goals for 2023 and that’s what I’m going to share with you today! So without further ado, here we go!

Some people write goals at the beginning of the year and others write resolutions – I write both. Part of my building a better year process is writing resolution statements for my current season of life and then setting goals under that resolution. Also, my goals and resolutions are written with the intentional purpose of giving glory to God. This year I wanted to be very clear about the focus of my goal setting. I want to always be cognizant of why I want to build a better year. Twelve months is a loooooong time and it’s easy to lose track, & run low on motivation. Knowing that my “why” is God’s glory, no matter what happens or what threatens to derail me will help me prioritize what matters most. If you want to learn more about writing both goals & resolutions for the glory of God, you can check out the Build a Better Year course here!!

You’ll also notice that I have 6 resolution statements. That’s by design. I have one resolution for each of the Live Well 6. If you don’t know what that is, you can learn more about the Live Well 6 here!

Now on to my resolutions and goals!

LIVE WELL AVOCATIONALLY

RESOLUTION – I resolve to balance my work with recreation, discovery, & rest so that I can be renewed by the beauty of God’s world & His people.

  3. Practice piano daily
  4. Learn more about annotating books
  5. Keep a life journal
  6. Keep a Better Year Project Playbook
  7. Go on a hiking trip with Steven

You may wonder why bother setting both resolutions and goals. Like, what’s the big deal? Well, a couple of reasons. First, it keeps me focused, like I mentioned before. I want to be intentional about making choices and choosing projects that will give glory to God. My resolutions help me keep that front and center. Second, there’s a very real chance I’m not going to complete all my goals. The year looks fresh and clean and promising right now, full of all kinds of possibilities, but the truth of the matter is, anything could happen. My goals could very well change but my resolutions won’t. No matter what, I want to do my best work. No matter what, I want to pursue simple, thoughtful living. No matter what I want to build a healthy lifestyle. How I live up to my resolutions might change as circumstances and situations might change through the year. And honestly, that’s to be expected.

If there is anything that the past few years have taught us it’s that anything is possible and everything is up for grabs. I don’t have full control over whether or not I accomplish everything I set out to do but that’s okay. I know who holds my future and if I stick to my resolve to give glory to Him and follow His lead all year long, 2023 will be a success regardless of what I do or do not check off my list!

Let me know in the comments what you’re hoping to accomplish in 2023! I’d love to read all about your plans. And if you’re interested in learning how you can give build better goals so you can give God better glory, check out Build a Better Year 2023!

Best way to kick start the last quarter of the yea Best way to kick start the last quarter of the year! To know me is to know that Point of Grace music is so incredibly foundational to the soundtrack of my life. Everyone of their records reminds me of a season of my life and whenever I feel off track I can always get back to what’s most important with songs that have grounded me since childhood. I’m so glad I got to hear them live tonight! I’ve been feeling anxious and overwhelmed the past several weeks and now I’m feeling inspired again and more at peace 😎

We can all agree that the OT genealogies are great We can all agree that the OT genealogies are great reading matter for insomnia.

Then there are the purity laws.
And the land assignments.
And the censuses.
You get it.

It’s not a sin to say that parts of the Bible are boring, confusing, or hard to follow & understand. It just means you have Bible-reading muscles to stretch out and exercise. There are things you have to get used to and it can take time. But in the meantime, here’s one thing to keep in mind when in a less than exciting or inspiring passage of scripture -

God cares about details. He’s not careless or haphazard. He’s interested in establishing track records because He knows the only way to make His case of love & justice is to offer evidence of His faithfulness in spite of the unfaithfulness of humanity. Nothing is an accident and even when humans don’t listen and jack stuff up, He never loses control over the situation.

It’s okay if it’s boring for awhile. Stick with it until you see its beauty. It’s worth the effort!

“What does this have to do with me?” “How d “What does this have to do with me?”

“How does this speak into what I’m going through today?”

“How does change my life?”

These aren’t bad questions, in fact, they’re good questions and we should ask them. We just shouldn’t ask them FIRST. If we’re primarily concerned with what the Bible has to do with US, we’re probably going to pass up the parts that legit will tell us nothing about life as modern humans (genealogies and law codes anyone?). Instead, we have to change our presuppositions -

1. The Bible isn’t about me. The Bible is about God and His redemptive work in the world.
2. I need to let God’s story tell me about about Himself
3. Knowing who God is, what His intentions are for humans & how He operates in the world makes up the framework I need to understand myself, my value, & my purpose on this planet.

Don’t get me wrong. the Bible will tell you a whole lot about yourself. But first let it tell you about God. Start looking for glimpses of Jesus & the Gospel. In some places He may be harder to spot than others but He’s there, His plan is there, His love is there. Always ❤️

Reading the Bible early morning is a fantastic asp Reading the Bible early morning is a fantastic aspiration and I can’t wait to get there buuuuuuut it’s not required. If you wait for perfect, you’ll be waiting for the rest of your life. Just do it. Make the time and do it. Life is constantly changing and you’ll always have to make adjustments, navigate interruptions, and balance priorities. If this matters to you, you’ll make it happen. ❤️

There’s a lot in the Bible that troubles our mod There’s a lot in the Bible that troubles our modern sensibilities, world views, & feelings, etc.. But you would be foolish to judge an entire movie after only seeing one scene, a show after a plot twist in S3 E5, or a novel by one conversation toward the end of the book. We know not to do it with anything else but the Bible is judged by isolated verses & stories. It doesn’t work like that. While the Bible is holy, it works just like any other story - it should be read in its entirety.

• Yes it’s hard
• Yes, it takes discipline
• Yes there may be a learning curve
• Yes there are some parts that are really boring at first

But it’s good and glorious and God’s gift to humanity. If you care at all about Jesus, take the time to read His story. Take the time to figure it out, to ask questions, to be frustrated, to not be good at it. All of those things are okay. God can handle it all - I promise. Just show up. He’ll meet you there.
